The airline was established in 1987 as Casino Express Airlines, and started operations in 1989.
The airline changed its name to Xtra Airways on December 8, 2005,[3] as a reflection of the purchase of 19% interest in the company by the parent company of the British travel company XL Airways UK.
The operating relationship with XL ended in September, 2008, when XL Airways UK ceased operations although the parent company of XL Airways and other XL Airways Airlines continued on. At that time, Xtra Airways was operating as a financially independent entity and was not leasing aircraft from XL. The independent status of Xtra left its operations unchanged when XL UK went into administration.
In June 2010, the company moved its corporate headquarters to Boise, Idaho from Elko, Nevada to better position itself for sustained growth.[4]
Xtra operates charters to airports in the conterminous United States, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, and Central and South America and operates flights for Direct Air from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The Xtra Airways fleet includes the following aircraft (as of 11 June 2010)[5]:
